| Lighting A light is not needed for this turtle. In the wild the waters it lives in are dark and murky and the sun doesn't always penetrate through the rain forest canopy and the dark water. Feeding Once you get the enclosure set up, your turtle will want to eat. Feeding is fairly easy as well. It must be alive or defrosted. I have not had experience feeding commerical turtle pellets to my matamata. Items that are fed can be frozen fish (defrost it first), live fish, bait shrimp, tadpoles, and frogs. Smaller turtles can be fed insects and earthworms. There is a lot of controversy over the feeding of Goldfish to turtles. Many of the goldfish you find in pet stores are bred in farms that use high amounts of copper sulfate to prevent algae growth. This buildup in the predator (the turtle) could be detremental to their health. So use minnows and shiners you can get at bait stores. The key is variety. You don't like to eat the same thing everyday, neither does the turtle. I like to change the types of food frequently and give the turtle plenty of opportunity to hunt. Mine seems to prefer live food to the defrosted stuff. It is also not a good idea to always feed the turtle defrosted fish. The fish loose some of the vitamins that are essential for the turtle. ¸¶Å¸¸¶Å¸ ¼öÄƵé. WATER The care of the
matamata in captivity is pretty straight forward, provided you have the proper
pH balance of the water. The water needs to maintained at a relatively low
(acidic) pH level. I use about 5.5-6.5. Usually keep it at the 6 level. I've
heard it can even go as low as 4. Another thing I add to the water is the Tetra
Blackwater extract. This makes the water look a dirty brown but is actually
beneficial to the turtle because it recreates the decaying leaves that would
normally be in the matmata's natural habitat. The water temperature is pretty
important too. They need it fairly warm. A good range is 78-82 degrees F
(26-28C).

The size of the enclosure doesn't need to be that big. Obviously, the bigger the turtle, the bigger the enclosure. I also recommend, as with all reptiles, use the largest size enclosure you can afford (financially and as in my case space wise). A large sweater box or one of those plastic tubs makes a good inclosure, especially for a large turtle. The water level can't be too deep. Once again this would be determined by the size of the turtle. The water depth cannot extend further than the turtle's neck is long. What that means is the turtle must be able to sit on the bottom and stick its snorkel above the water. The turtle will not swim to the top like most aquatic turtles. The setup is similar to that of either of the snapping turtle species. ¼öÁ¶ÀÇ Å©±â¸¦ ±×¸® Ŭ ÇÊ¿ä´Â ¾ø½À´Ï´Ù.
